Our Approach

Our Approach To Therapy Addresses The Mind, Body, And Spirit Together

When most people begin therapy, their first concern is whether or not their counselor will actually understand what they’re going through. Here at Wilmington Psychotherapy, our therapists have over 100 years of combined life experience and over 30 years of experience as counselors. We’ve each had our fair share of struggles and, at times, we’ve each sought professional help in our lives, too. What’s more, we are intellectually-driven people who draw from a wide range of philosophies and wisdom from the ages. Learning is a lifelong process for us, and we are always incorporating new ideas into our worldviews.

We take a very holistic approach to the therapeutic process. We believe that true healing is achieved by addressing the mind, body, and spirit together. When we started Wilmington Psychotherapy years ago, we had a very simple philosophy that holds true to this day: we believe you have worth, value and dignity, the capacity to think for yourself, and the ability to choose your own destiny. We believe you can achieve your goals, wishes and desires in life. To grow as a person, you simply need an environment that provides you with genuineness (openness and self-disclosure), acceptance (being seen with unconditional positive regard), and empathy (being listened to and understood). Our goal is not to change you—but to help you grow and learn new things about yourself as we accompany you in the pursuit of your journey toward wellness and successful living.

Our sessions have a very warm, conversational atmosphere. Our pledge is “to hold you and your issues with deep respect and caring.” The most important part of counseling is ensuring that you feel seen, heard, and understood on a deeper level. We believe that when that happens, everything else in the healing process falls naturally into place.

Each of us brings a different approach to therapy, but there are three modalities that we find most effective: Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Motivational enhancement therapy (MET) is a directive, person-centered approach to therapy that focuses on improving your motivation to change. The goal of REBT is to help you challenge irrational or self-defeating thoughts and beliefs. Alternatively, ACT aims to help you accept your thoughts and emotions instead of blaming yourself for them.

That said, we have executive training and supervision in a much, much wider range of modalities. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to therapy. The method of treatment we choose is ultimately dependent on what you feel would best suit your needs.

Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, chronic pain, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or substance abuse and addictive behaviors, we encourage you to pursue counseling with us. Between our support and your commitment, we believe we can empower you to move forward in life with greater peace of mind and a clearer sense of identity.

Getting Started With Us Is Very Simple And Straightforward

Our practice offers a free, 15-minute phone consultation where we can get to know you and match you with a therapist. During the intake session, your therapist will examine your background, family history, symptoms, and goals for therapy. Beyond getting to know you, however, we want to establish trust and confidentiality. Therapy is a time when you can say whatever you’re feeling. Whether you choose to pursue telehealth or in-person counseling, we can ensure that there will be no judgment or compromise of privacy.

With clients who are using insurance, it is necessary to develop a diagnosis in order to file claims for reimbursement of services. It should be noted, however, that diagnoses are not the focus of our practice. Rather than giving a name to your medical condition, we want to help you grow as a person. Everything else is secondary to the actual healing process.

Our practice provides both early morning and evening appointments. Additionally, we offer phone sessions and online counseling sessions. We will pursue whichever option you feel comfortable with.

If you are looking for a therapist in the Wilmington area, we encourage you to look no further! Brand-new clients can call 910-777-1189 to get started. Current clients may call, text, or access our patient portal to book new appointments.
