Hypnotherapy

What Is Hypnotherapy?

Whether we know it or not, all of us go into trances every day of our lives. When we daydream, we enter a trance; when we become so engrossed in a movie or book that we block out everything else, we enter a trance.

Hypnotherapy is in many ways just like these experiences. The goal of hypnotherapy is to help you become so focused on your therapist’s voice that you block out all other distractions and open yourself up to new suggestions and insights.

Many people have a misconception of hypnosis as the act of being forced into an altered state of mind. This is not the case with hypnotherapy. With this approach, you have full control over your words and actions. Your counselor will never pressure you to do anything you don’t want to do. Hypnotherapy can help you access and resolve unconscious thoughts, feelings, and memories.

How Effective Is Hypnotherapy

Scientific research confirms the power of hypnosis in therapy. One study compared the effects of Cognitive Hypnosis on patients to the effects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). By the end of the study, the patients who had done Cognitive Hypnosis alone reported more overall improvement than those who’d undergone both hypnosis and CBT combined. Other studies attest to the power of hypnotherapy in treating anxiety, insomnia, chronic pain, irritable bowel syndrome, and even smoking and weight loss.

The reason hypnotherapy is so effective is that it allows you to access parts of yourself that you wouldn’t be able to in ordinary waking consciousness. This is what distinguishes it from traditional talk therapy. Because talking through your struggles requires a fully conscious mind, it’s easier to miss the beliefs and emotions that lie under the surface of your awareness.

What Does Hypnotherapy Look Like?

Our certified hypnotherapist, Dennis Mendleson, uses hypnotherapy to treat people suffering from anxiety, depression, panic attacks, sleep issues, grief and loss, migraines, and many other problems. Above all, he has found that this approach is most effective in treating trauma because of how it addresses the unconscious effects of trauma on a person’s life.

During hypnotherapy, you will relax in the office as your therapist plays soft, soothing music. Your therapist will begin by focusing on the issue that’s causing you distress. They’ll ask you questions about the problem, reassign meaning to the problem, and work to change the significance of the problem in your life. While this happens, you may find it easier to change your view of the problem and manage the feelings and sensations that accompany it. Practicing hypnosis repeatedly in a relaxed state of mind can help you reduce your emotional distress and, eventually, remove the problem from your life.

At the end of each session, your hypnotherapist will close by helping you work back toward a fully alert state. As you return to ordinary life, you may find it easier to find relief from suffering and let go of your need for control. Hypnotherapy can also help you improve your confidence and self-perception. Your internalized judgment may decrease and you may feel more at ease in your own skin. In short, hypnotherapy can help you find healing in your mind, body, spirit and every area of your life.

Dennis’ Experience With Hypnotherapy

Dennis Mendleson has been working in the mental health field since 1978 and has a Master’s in Mental Health Counseling from Wright State University. It wasn’t until 2010, however, that Dennis began studying to become a hypnotherapist. Put simply, he found that traditional talk therapy had too many limitations. It could help clients reduce their symptoms, but it couldn’t do much about the problem causing those symptoms.

As a result, Dennis began researching alternate forms of therapy that dug under the surface. He felt that hypnotherapy was the best option for helping people not only reduce but also eliminate their emotional pain. He has been using it for years and continues to see positive results in his clients.
